Padron Family Reserve Cigar No 45 click picture to close
The Padrón Family Reserve No. 45 Maduro first reached cigar shops on September 8, the 45th anniversary of the creation of Padrón Cigars Inc. by José Orlando Padrón. The 83-year-old Cuban émigré is the embodiment of the American dream, having come to the United States in the early 1960s with nothing more than a few hundred dollars, a solid work ethic and the burning desire to make cigars that tasted as good as the ones he smoked as a young man in Cuba. The image of a hammer on this special release commemorates a most precious gift given to him by a friend when he was virtually penniless-the tool allowed him to eke out a living as a carpenter, money he saved to form a small cigar company. The cigar smokers of the world owe that benefactor a great debt, for the Padrón family continues to give us one brilliant cigar after another. No company has dominated the ratings in the way Padrón Cigars has. This is the third time it has been named Cigar Aficionado's Cigar of the Year, an honor that has only existed for six years.

Rated 96 and the #1 Cigar of the Year 2011.

Casa Magna Colorado Cigar Robusto click picture to close
Manuel Quesada has been making cigars since 1974. His original cigars were mild bodied, most of them a blend of Dominican filler and binder tobaccos cloaked with light Connecticut-seed wrappers. His latest endeavors are bolder, more vibrant smokes. The Casa Magna is his greatest innovation. He joined forces with Nicaragua's largest grower of cigar tobacco, Nestor Plasencia, and created this blend in Plasencia's Segovia Cigar factory.

E.P. Carrillo Short Run 2013 Cigars click picture to close
E. P. Carrillo Brand owner Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, who started as a boutique cigarmaker in Miami, began his Short Run campaign in 2010 as a limited-edition offshoot of his core E.P. Carrillo line. "My decision to start the Short Run was based on tobacco that I thought had special characteristics but was not available enough to use in regular production lines," says Perez-Carrillo. "So far, the Short Run releases have been one-time runs. We experiment with seeds and tobaccos from areas that fall outside the realm of those found in our normal brands." Perez-Carrillo used an Ecuadoran Connecticut wrapper over a Connecticut broadleaf binder for the 2012 Short Run. Every Short Run only sees about 108,000 cigars per release. By comparison, Perez-Carrillo's regular-production core lines total around 1.5 million cigars each year.

Viaje Super Shot Cigar Zombie click picture to close
Viaje brand owner Andre Farkas has zombies on his mind. The Zombie Super Shot is a ghoulish, monster-themed-follow up to his Super Shot cigars released last year. Only 300 boxes were made. Packaged to look like shotgun ammo specifically intended for zombie elimination, Zombie Super Shots are short, stout, 3 ½ inch by 54 ring (10 gauge ) Nicaraguan puros packed in tidy 25-count boxes. Each cigar is covered in a Criollo '98 wrapper. "It's a mash-up of my Zombie line, which came out two years ago, and the Super Shot," said Farkas, adding that the blend is far closer to the Zombie line in character than it is to the original Super Shot brand.

E.P. Carrillo Inch Cigars click picture to close
The newest smoke from EPC Cigar Co. takes the thick cigar trend to a new level. Inch by E.P. Carrillo, a line of three cigars with ring gauges no thinner than 60, have just been completed and will be on their way to cigar stores over the next two weeks. The cigars are adorned with bands made to look like old rulers. The company is making this a regular addition to its growing line of cigars, but they expect to make only about 100,000 to 125,000 of the Inch cigars this year, based on limited supplies of some of the Dominican filler tobacco used in the blend. "A lot of the fillers we're using from the Dominican Republic were grown in very small quantities," said Ernesto Perez-Carrillo III of the new cigar. Most of the filler blend is Dominican, with a bit of Nicaraguan viso. The binder is also Nicaraguan.
